Paula Scher

Areas of distinction:
Identity design,
packaging design,
publication design,

environmental graphics

* Paula Scher has been at the forefront of graphic design for more than three decades. Iconic, smart and unabashedly populist, her images have entered into the American vernacular.

* Paula Scher studied at the Tyler School of Art in Philadelphia

* She began her graphic design career as a record cover art director at both Atlantic and CBS Records in the 1970s.

* 1984 she co-founded Koppel & Scher, and in 1991 she joined Pentagram as a partner.

* Paula has developed identity and branding systems, promotional materials, environmental gr
aphics, packaging and publication designs.

* Paula expands on her highly acclaimed Maps series to create her most engaging work yet, depicting entire continents, countries and cities from all over the world that have been the critical focus of attention in recent headlines.

* Dynamic images are saturated with layers of elaborate line, explosions of words, and bright colours creating a plethora of visual information that produces an emotive response to places lived, visited, and imagined.

* Scher's maps also reflect the abundance of information that inundates us daily through newspapers, radio, television, and the Internet to reveal the fact that much of what we hea
r and read is strewn with inaccuracy, distorted facts, and subjectivity.

* The boston album was first released in 1978 and sold six million copies, the album only had one hit, “more than a feeling”,. The boston album is an iconic image that has eclipsed the identities of those who invented it. Boston never had another album as successful as the first.

* Paula’s
friends at CBS records in the seventies commented that when she dies, her inscription on her tombstone would read the, “ Art director of the original Boston album, “ the thought has always horrified paula.
